Hello everyone I need help. I am trying to remove the drive shaft from the lower unit on a 50 hp 1990. I am going to replace the bearings. does the shaft just come out or is it bolted in somehow? thanks for any help.

Re: remove drive shaft

You would likely find an OEM shop manual useful at this point.

Why don't you look at the parts list for your motor on BRP Evinrude website.

See attached

Typically, you will need to disassemble the gearcase, since the driveshaft has the pinion fastened with a hex nut reachable only from within the gearcase. I would get the book to see exactly what you need to do.

Thank you Wilde1j, Yes I have looked at manual but was unclear if that nut was fastened but with you reply I n0w know it is. I will move on. You mite answer another question for me? is there a way to get the bearing housing off without pulling the drive shaft, will it pull off?

Re: remove drive shaft

You won't regret it ... there's a lot of very expensive metal in the gearcase.
