79 Johnson 70 tilt/trim install -- tetris anyone?

Purchased an OMC tilt/trim to add to my 79 Jonson 70 hp. This is the unit that fits between the stern brackets. I currently have the motor (brackets attached) hanging from a come along.

Is it possible to install it without taking the stern brackets off the motor? I've been trying to Tetris it in there for about an hour and am a smidgen frustrated.

Figured out how to remove the 2 big nuts holding the stern brackets on, with only one wrench large enough (de-installed my bench vise & pressed it into service as a very large wrench). Wow -- much easier! now if I can only get it to work.... more searching the threads ahead.....
