Hi- I'm new to iboats, and have been doing a lot of reading on some of the other threads during my rebuild/restoration of my 1976 Wellcraft Nova 250 (thanks to all for the tips/tricks/advice). I'm building up a pair of 302's and would really like to avoid replacing the outdrives. I've been told that with the set up I'll be running (new pistons/top end kit/ 4bbl/through hull exhaust) I could easily be topping 350 hp, I know I should upgrade, but if the drives are in ok shape and I dont beat on them (full throttle hole shots, jumping waves) might I be ok?... I'll put up some pictures as I get going...Thanks!

Ayuh,... A 302 would be hard pressed to grenade an Alpha drive, even your Pre-alphas....

If you in fact (read dynamometer) can get 350 horsepower out of a naturally aspirated 302,
in an RPM range you can use in a marine application,
you will be using a camshaft that should suck enough water (read reversion) to ensure another rebuild on both engines.

i dont believe i will be getting quite near that power after getting the short blocks back. i will be close to 300 at the crank, but that will be up around 5600 rpms (which i dont plan on being able to run on the water). Honestly, if it produces around 225-250 at normal operating RPM's ill be happy/surprised. do you still feel that reversion would be an issue?

What is the lobe separation angle (LSA) of the camshaft?

It is all about cam choice, too much overlap and you start sucking water out of the exhaust. Does your engine builder know anything about marine engines or is he just a car guy.

225-250 crank hp from a 302 is very doable though. Bunch a 4.3s out there in that range. Airflow is key, and that means good heads.

My cam specs are: 202/214 .448/.472 with 112 deg separation. The guy i'm working with is more of a car guy, but has worked on some boats. I'll be installing a top end kit from a company called Portworx (found kit on ebay and called the shop directly)

Looks heavy for her size. tAKE IT EASY AND THE ALPHAS WILL BE OKAY. THERE ARE SOME UPATES AVAIL. TO MAKE STRONGER. SORRY FOR THE CAPS.
My buddy had a 30 panther with alpha's twin 454 in front of them. No real trouble, use mercruiser Hi-Performance gear oil. Change regulary, mayby twice a year depending on use.

Nova23z- Thanks, I am actually going to have to replace at least 1, or have repairs done. When I opened up the top cap on the out drive to take a look at the oil/top gear...one was a milkshake. Not what I wanted to see yesterday. I've had to put the cosmetics on hold for now- and am searching for some outdrives. Does anyone know if i can mate an alpha 1 up to the gimbal/trans assembly that i have going?!?

That teak looks great.

...and yes you can bolt a gen1 alpha right on, no problems. SEI sells brand new ones right here on iboats for just over a grand - three year NO FAULT warranty.

I second the SeI outdrives. And yes, they will bolt up to your pre-alpha transom assembly. Just let them know what you have and the length of the driveshaft, etc and they can make one up for you.

Thanks guys- I have been researching the SEI outdrives, and feel that I will be going that route. Will I need to go with the install/seal kit as well?

I have read a few horror stories when do-it-yourselfers install the SEI kit, any thoughts? Or, is this just the worst case stories from idiots rising up to the surface?!

Thanks for the input all!

Are you talking about this kit?

It is mostly the nuts, etc you will need. You can reuse the ones from your old unit if they are in good shape. Then simply buy the gasket set for the actual mounting of the outdrive. If your old ones are messed up, it is probably easiest to simply buy the complete install kit.

Hey iboats - totally forgot about updating after things got rolling down hill. After 18 months and more $$$ that I'd like to own up to, she finally hit the water this past month. The engines sound great, the 4bbl carb upgrade coupled with the high performance heads make a world of difference on the top end. All in all, I gained around 15 mph on my top end, went from 188 hp/engine to 275hp/engine, and noticed an increase in fuel econ (ever so slight, and most likely due to the 4bbl swap). I ended up having to swap out the outdrives, one was shot and had water in the oil after taking it off the transom last year. I went with SEI alpha 1 equivalent, and did a counter-rotating port drive upgrade. I wont claim wild improvements in straight line tracking, but I do notice it is much more maneuverable around the docks. I ran 4" exhaust out the side (previously had 3" and some wicked bends I wanted to eliminate), and will say that I'll never work with 4" in that type of set up again. That was hands down one of the biggest challenges to get set up. I am glad I kept it side exit, as it gives the Nova a unique look and sound that no other boats her size have. Turns heads everywhere I go, and cant wait for next season. I'll post more pictures once I get them off the camera - thanks all for the advise throughout the months. Feel free to comment or ask questions -
