Had to edit to explain better:

1)wash boat first
2)clean area where numbers will be with Iso or acitone to get super clean
3)apply numbers
4)wax
5)polish wax out

If wet sanding that is step one

Good question! This weekend I am wet-sanding, polishing, and waxing so I am curious to see what the pros have to say as well...

I removed the numbers, wetsanded, polished, put the numbers on, and then waxed over it.

Well, the last two steps are polish then wax. Wax is the final protective layer. I wouldn't polish around graphics/letters/vinyl adhesives.

Polish is a mild buffer/cleaner/shiner.

I cannot believe the number of people who forget the last step, but here is the order. The last step is a must.

Wash, clean, remove adhesives/residues, clean areas where stickers are going (to make sure acetone or whatever is gone), apply stickers, wipe clean, polish whatever you cleaned (not stickers), wax, re-wax, AND re-wax.

Last step: Have a brewskie.

Sure, I guess every process has room for improvement! Maybe if I flow-charted the whole thing I would have noticed that!
