when I bought my boat I noticed the prop bolt was just finger tight wth pin in. Didnt seem right to me, but the guy said thats the way it is supposed to be and that I should not tighten it anymore. It still doesnt sound right to me. Im kind of embarresed to even post this question. It needs to be tightened to a specific torque right? not just finger tight?

Finger tight and then a little more to the next available cotter pin hole is how I do it.

Yep, I agree with both above. The pin is just there to stop the nut from vibrating out. If you think about it, when the motor is in FWD the prop is pushing against the thrust bearing in front and there is no pressure at all on the nut.

The gearcase sections of the V4 crossflow service manuals more recently show what is in the thumbnail, taken from the 1993 crossflow manual #508285.

Gearcases for loop charged motors have higher torque specifications which should be followed.

Thanks ezeke.

'76'-135 is a crossflow.

I have removed 5 bolts out of the lower unit and removed the slider from the shifter so its free to drop but the lower unit is looking like the side opposite of the prop is a bit loose (a slight split at the gasket) but on the prop side it is still very tight. Am I missing something?

Yes, you need to remove the trim tab and then the bolt that is hidden above it.

Mark the trim tab first so that you can replace it as it was.
