I have a 1999 5.0 L merc with a trim pump. Slightly low on fluid. The dealer told me to use oil or transmission oil. I searched threads here and some have said power steering fluid.
Currently there is a red fluid in he pump reservoir. What would be best to use and least harmful if I mix?

Re: Trim pump fluid

I believe power steering fluid is pretty much trans fluid. I'd use the trans fluid if it already has the redish tint. I use straight SAE30 in my trim pump.

Thanks. I will use tranny fluid. I thought power steering was the same but the can I have of power steering fluid is clear. Is it worth buying a can of tranny if I have clear power steering fluid.
