A 40hp with the single wall motor leg? Never new they had those, till they redesigned them in the 70's. Are you sure that's not like a 28 or 33 with a different hood? Take a look at the photo on the right here. http://www.old-omc.de/j_1966/seite_05.jpg

Right, mid could be from any number of motors, but as I stated the upper cowl looks to be from 1966.

Have to wait for the numbers off the welch plug on the engine block to be sure.

Here's what the 1973 model looks like: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2021712630101354590SsQqvj

the plate should be on the transon mount. either under the front of the motor, or on the opposite side of the transon mount. see red marks.

I'm thinking 1972 40hp with leg repainted white.

I don't believe the 40 ever had that syle of motor leg. That is one used on the 25, 28, 30, 33 and 35. The 40's throughout the whole 60's had the "Super Quiet" shroud set up.

I agree, the 1970's 40 that had a similar leg had a different lower cowl that would not have matched the cover that he is showing.

Here's the 1971 Johnson 40hp with that leg that you say they never had. But I may also be wrong as the Only thing from a 1972 forty that I found had the square cover already. So it may not be the 1972 40 either.

Circa 1962-64 ish 28 or 33hp with a 40hp hood. I don't think that hood will fit a '70s 40hp, though I have never tried it. If you want to remove all doubts, remove the cylinder head and measure the bore. Or post some pictures of the powerhead with the hood off.

Holy ****, soundchaser, you could be onto something here. I could have sworn that the 33 was the last motor to use that motor leg style. Then again, why change something that worked well for many years.:D You have to admit, that would take a lot of weight off of the motor. Well, the suspense is killin me. Hopefully a model number will get posted here. I may have to look for one of those as one of my next projects. :D

So it could be a 1971 +/- Evinrude 40HP with a 1966 Johnson cover, or a number of possible 33 HP Evinrudes with a Johnson cover. What is the bore?
