My cousin has a Force 15hp engine on his boat. Since I just restored my 40hp Evinrude, he asked me if I could get this going for him. I guess he took it to a local place, and they said its to old, we cant get parts for it, and gave it back. I pulled the flywheel, and there are just 2 magnetos. No points or condensors. There are the mounting spots for them, but nothing. Mag plate is even stamped with a points gap, but there are no points. Is there suposed to be? Or was this mag plate just a common one used on many models so the stampings do not apply to this?

YEP! If it has magneto coils, then it needs points and condensers, two sets. Be certain the removable cam is still in place on the crankshaft.

1990 is not really an old engine---You may be able to get the parts here at iboats. Some NAPA stores carry marine parts too. As always, franzmarine@aol.com will be able to supply you. Last time I bought points, they were 16 bucks each and I don't know what the condensers cost.

Heres the thing. Looking up on iboats, it gives a CDI coil pack needed? Any idea what I would ask for at an auto parts place? There is also no drive cam for the points, and none of the hold down screws or anything are there for them.

Mercury did buy out US Marine, in 1989/1990.

You should be able to get some or most parts from a Mercury dealer.
Or from a Mercury dealer that sells online, such as dougrussell.com

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...lid=06&coldesc=15 H.P. (1984-1995)&index=1459

Here is the ignition system for 1988 thru 1992B models:

Once you know what parts you need, you can try NAPA.
They carry a line of aftermarket parts for many motors, not sure if they have them for this motor.

The good news is that it looks like all the parts are available from Mercury, but they aren't cheap.

Re: 1990? 15hp force ignition

I have a late 80's (88-89?) Gamefisher 7.5HP that's basically a detuned and rebadged Force 15HP. The outboard uses "BIM" coil packs that are no longer available (NLA) so you have to upgrade to a CDI ignition, $150-200. The CDI kit has 2 coils, wiring, ignition module and plug wires. The kit installs different than the original ignition, but the instructions are pretty good.

BTW, my ignition looks exactly like the link roscoe posted, no points and condenser, just the BIM coil packs and associated wiring.
