I've run Tanaka's for years and if the recoil springs break near the middle you've got to find a new one, but if it's either end/tip that breaks you can just rework it a bit with a grinder or pliers and put it back together. Parts for these are getting a bit hard to find but if you Google up "Tanaka Outboards for Sale" there's always a few folks trying to sell them. I have one spare recoil spring in my tool kit but I better keep it for when mine breaks. Good Luck!
