lower end question

I got a 79 johnson 100hp javelin motor. I was wonder what the small phillips head screw is for on the lower unit. I know its not the fill or drain plug, but it is between the two.

It holds the pinion bearing race in place...

i took it out when i was going throught the lower end. I didn't take the gears out though. can i just put it back and be all right or do i need to tear it all apart again?

If you can line the threads up then yes. Removing that screw is a no no in normal circumstances. Do a search and you will find some tips on how to do this.

If you resealed unit you should have the new o-ring for the screw, replace o-ring and apply gasket sealer to threads and o-ring, torque to 65 in. lbs
