Im working on a 1960 40hp johnson . won't idle well. checked ignition system . new points condenser plug wires and plugs coils look ok. My problem is that only one magnet under flywheel is magnetic. motor runs well at half speed or full throttle.carb adjusts fine. is this one not being magnetic my problem????Thanks for your response

Have you set the timing on it and yes I believe both magnets should be magnetic. If one isn't it's probably time for a flywheel.

If it's running fine at 1/2 & WTO it's not the magnets. More than likely you've got a clogged low speed jet or idle circuit. I would thoroughly go through the carb. Likely it's gummed up!

Magnets made since WWII simply do not go bad. Well, it might if you get it red hot or something, I've never tried that. Anyhow, it is starting and running so it is not a bad magnet, if it were possible.
