stalls when i shift

well heres the story, i have a 19 foot wellcraft with a 4 cyl merc in it, its an 87. heres the problem. starts fine runs fine drives fine throttle seems to work fine, but after im out in the water driving around for a bit, when i slow down and shift into neutral i have to rock the shifter back and forth for it to shift to neutral. also when i try to shift into reverse the shifter kinda binds and the motor stalls unless i pull the shifter hard then it will shift. just wondering if this is an adjustment problem or a cable or maybe something worse... THANK YOU for any input...

P.S. its an se106 outdrive, was an alfa 1... THANX

yea i thought you were all goin to say that... wish i had replaced it when i had the outdrive off. finally stopped raining for a few mins just now so i ran out and took a look just to make sure i wasnt missing anything and it all seems ok. guess im looking for a lower shift cable now. thanx again to all who took the time to read and reply. this forum is a life saver
