I have a 76 40hp johnson and everytime I get up to higher rpms the motor slips out of gear and jusr revs up and wont go anywhere. I was told it may be the linkage but I am not sure what to look for. Any thoughts?

Does it make any noise when it slips out of gear, it maybe just a slipping prop hub.

Re: slipping out of gear

Could be a spun hub if it just revs high.
Else, if you hear/feel a startling loud bang, it could be a bad clutch dog.

The linkage can be easily checked as well. Also, is this a remote setup?

I was thinking that a clutch dog wear out wouldn't just happen suddenly or would it?

the linkage is set wrong, the cluch dog is wore out, the forward gear locking lug's are damaged, or all of the above.
