Volvo Penta AQ271C-Can't Shift

Hello Friend, my name is Richard. I live in WA. I owned a Volvo Penta AQ271C.
I couldn't shift to Forward and Backward. I can only shift forward and backward"Only if I push the middle nob" . Should I replace the shift cable. I need your advice. Much appreciated.

You can only shift forward and backward by pushing the nob is exactly what one would expect, I'm not sure I'm understanding the question?
