What is the factory recommended procedure for starting this motor? I have tried and succeeded in many ways but I would like to know what the factory advised when the motor was produced. Thanks!!

Re: 1980 Mercury hard to start

Hi,

Put the drain plug in the boat.
Put the engine in the water or hook a hose to it.
Squeeze the primer bulb until it gets firm.
Make sure the kill switch is installed if you have one.
Disengage the **** and advance the throttle.
Engage the choke.
Pull the rope like you mean it.

If you happen to have a bigger engine.
Instead of pulling the rope turn the key.

When it pops take the choke off and do what you did to turn it over.

If it is hard starting and you are priming the fuel and using a choke then there might be an underlying problem. Can you tell us whats going on?
