Today i drained the gearcase on my 2003 Honda 40 BF and the oil came out green! What causes that? I hope my engine is not kaput!

Depends on what color went in? I am sure there are different colors out there. The milky color (coffee w/cream) is the bad one. Just change it, I like to use synthetic.

The green is probably synthetic oil. I run synthetic in my 60hp Johnson 4 stroke and it's green. Like was mentioned, you don't want it to look creamy/milky green. Should be pretty dark. If it's creamy there's moisture in the gearcase. How often do you change it?

Thanks for your ideas. The oil went in honey-colored and came out a translucent dark green. I figure it is salt water that does it. But there must be a seal that keeps water out that has gone bad if it is indeed water.

It is hard to buy those little plastic washers that go between the plug and gearcase too.

Anyway, i will find out - maybe the hard way.

Are you sure you are not confusing your crankcase oil with your gearcase oil?
