At the age of 46, I got my first tattoo. Figured by the time I lived to regret it, I'll be dead.
Rush fans will immediately recognize their "starman" logo. This logo, and the first half of the 2112 album was inspired by Ayn Rand's classic novel Anthem. It is about a world in which the state, represented by the red star (which in itself is a symbol of the police/military power of the state), controls every aspect of human activity...what books one may read, to what music one may listen, the job one performs as a vocation, where one lives, even what one thinks. The entire concept of individuality is outlawed and expunged from society--although not totally. Personal pronouns are not used. Everyone refers to themselves as "we," even in their thoughts. All live, work, and breath for the benefit of the collective. Dissidents are eliminated. Education's only purpose it to brainwash the collective and reinforce the goals of the state.
The logo represents the individual's struggle against collectivism/statism.
Eh...seemed appropriate to the times.
We've taken care of everything
The words you read the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
One for all and all for one
Work together, common sons
Never need to wonder how or why
We are the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx
Our great computers, fill the hallow halls
We are the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls
Look around this world we've made
Equality our stock in trade
Come and join the Brotherhood on Man
What a nice contented world
Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand
It really didn't hurt that much, although there were parts of my arm where the needle felt like a razor cutting through my skin with a little electric shock added for good measure.
This one took two hours.
