Hot Choke

I have a 1976 Johnson Javelin 85 hp. The electric choke next to the carb was getting real hot and has now stopped working. Anyone now why this has happened? I cut the wires that run to it so it would stop.

Re: Hot Choke

sounds like it shorted out

Or, some other wiring defect caused it to be always "on". With that thought in mind, a thermal switch caused them to be 1/2 way "on" during the warm-up period. It is suggested to rewire it so it is fully "on" when you activate it at the choke switch. That is--both choke solenoid wires go to the choke switch and do not connect the warm-up thermal switch.

Re: Hot Choke

to get hot it must have been energised all the time. Check out the switching and the wiring for possible defects.

the solenoid coil may now have burnt out.

Re: Hot Choke

F_R is correct, though most of the "automatic choke" systems were disabled and rewired by the service departments many years ago, if someone rewired it, it will definitely cause the problem described.

The solenoid will have two purple wires, one controlled by the toggle switch or ignition switch, and the other controlled by a temperature switch located next to the lifting eye.
