Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

I called a friend over and between him, my dad, and me, we flipped the hull over on the grass.

Then the sanding began. Sanded pretty much where ever there was a rivit using the wire brush.

Nice job EvilDoc

you and the pops are rockin and rolling...looks like it ought to be a bad ***** tincan when your all done, great score on the other boat freebie mercruiser etc....hey before you remove it from the other boat TEST IT....test the outdrive shifting and see if the impeller is good (use a giant bucket of water to see if it sucks water in thru the intake ports on the outdrive)

that will be real cool if it is all GOOD and happy!

also check teh outdrive fluid to see if its milky....if it is it easier to repair it while its out instead of fixing itafter its been reinstalled...

just adding in a few thoughts ........sometimes people get excited and rush ripping parts out etc.....I know from EXPERIENCE in that LOL

We already took it apart and that didn't cross my mind to test it before taking it apart. Darn!

looks real good, its nice u have a tinny cuz our transom was a tad too large too, we had to trim and sand like a sombitch to get it to fit just perfect. If we hammered it in bad bad things would have happened.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

After it was all sanded down, Gluvit was applied to all the rivets.

Thost black spots are epoxy putty. There were some cracks on some of the rivets. So what we did was, we drilled a tiny hole on each side of the rivit where the cracks were. The holes were not through the hull though they were only superficial. Then they were filled with epoxy putty.

Then it was all Gluvited and finally gluvit was over with.

The bottom of the hull was primed using ZC.

We decided to paint the bottom of the hull using a spray gun. We applied 2 coats of Rustoleum oil based paint.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

I wasn't able to get a picture of the bottom of the hull fully painted. After it was done, the only thing left to do with the hull flipped over was to put the hull back on the trailer.

We hooked up the trailer to the truck. My dad backed up the trailer and I pushed the hull onto the trailer. Then we hooked up the boat to the strap and i started turning the winch and my dad backed up the trailer. It acutally worked out prety good.

Then it was finally back on the trailer.

The deck was re-installed to measure where to make the cuts for the placement of the cc.

The fuel tank was installed. We were first going to put it as far back as possible but then decided to move it fordward as much as possible.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

Strangely, I went to Home Depo looking for more white oil-based paint but the guy said they are phasing all oil-based paints out. They had aluminum colored oil based paint so I got that one and used it to paint the inside of the hull. It actually turned out pretty good I think.

I got this foam for free so this was a deciding factor on which foam to put in.
