Evinrude and Johnson Power Pack Difference

I have a 1969 Johnson 55 HP, the power pack is good. I want to know if the power pack on a 1969 Evinrude 85 HP is similar. There are eyelet terminals on the 85 HP and the 55HP has the three slot single connector. Can I reterminate the 55 HP pack to eyelets and connect it on the 85 HP engine. I was told they are similar power packs but the wire colors are different, or are the same but go to different places. Can someone shine some light on this?

The simple answer is yes the power packs are the same only different color wires and connectors. Research the color codes for connecting both and you will be fine. I put a power pack on mine that was for a different motor with different connectors and it works fine. Don't remember which motor it was meant for.

I have the schematics for the 55HP johnson, but not for the 85 HP Evinrude. Anyone know the wiring colors or diagram for the 1969 Evinrude 85HP or anything to share. Thanks.

Re: Evinrude and Johnson Power Pack Difference

I need a wiring diagram for a 1969 johnson model #trl-10r. I bought a boat and the ignition switch and selinod was missing and it was locked up .I got it unlocked installed the missing parts but no spark. So I just want to make sure I installed correctly. I also noticed a gray wire going from the power pack back towards the ignition switch but was not hooked up dont know where it goes/

Think the gray wire is for tach. You may want to post a new posting asking for a wiring diagram.

i think they are totally different, 3 cylinder pack will not work on a 4 cylinder motor. packs are identical for the same year and hp motors.

On a single coil with amplifier motor I was under the impression that it would not make any difference as the amp will fire to the coil only when instructed to do so by the points be it 3 cyl or 4. Maybe I am wrong?

according to parts catalog, neither of these motors has a power pack, and the amplifiers are different parts

Re: Evinrude and Johnson Power Pack Difference

looks like i need to replace the coil and amplfier, the amplfier is supposed to put out 200 volts. Mine is only puting out 16 volt. Does anyone know if you can rebuild these for cheaper than almost paying 300 dollars for a new one.
