I picked up this 1972 Starcraft this weekend and it's in need of a restoration, the floors (2 layers) were rotted along with the transom.

I tore out the floor today and hope to work on the transom tomm.

What thickness plywood should I use for the floor ???

also is there a plastic or Nylon sheeting that can be used instead ??

bunky, welcome to the club.

for the thickness of the floor... its all about compromise. i went with 1/2" and am satisfied. but it is still a little flimsy. 3/4" will be more solid, but added weight as well. there is absolutely no problem going with 1/2, so its a personal preference.

I used 3/4" plywood forthe floor and transom of my 1967 Starcraft. It was five ply and I got it at Home Repo. Lowe's DID have seven ply 3/4", which I would have much preferred, but every sheet they had was either warped beyond belief, or was full of big knots.

Thanks for the replies I think I. Will use 3/4 plywood.

But I have a question what the front plywood hooks to ?

Re: 72 Starcraft SS rebuild

Well this is going to be a slow restoration because of the weather and $$$ but I now have the Transom board out and the boat power washed..

Looks like a totally different boat..

Anyone have a transom pattern for a 18ft ??

Good looking boat there, Bunky. As far as a transom pattern, I used cardboard and cut it to fit, then used that to cut out the plywood. I had to use two sheets to get the proper thickness. Good luck.

Bunky, just a note here. You really should be using marine plywood for both the floor and the transom. also if you go back with 3/4 in the floor, your side panels aren't going to fit.

Go to my restore thread linked at the bottom of my post and check out what we did. It's not the only way, but it's one way and you can get an idea of what's going on there.

And welcome to the Starcraft club:D.

I don't know about the marine grade wood, after reading the 72 Brochure it says they only used Exterior grade wood when it was built,

Whats the problem with the side panels and the 3/4 didn't they use 3/4 new ?

I'm just asking for reference ?

I will check out your thread also..

Re: 72 Starcraft SS rebuild

Yes they used exterior grade wood, but they didn't plan on you having the boat for a long time. The marine grade wood is built with way better adhesives and will serve you much better. However, there are many folks on this site that have been using the ext grade. All I'm saying is that if you have the money and can wait for your supplier to get it for you, you might want to consider it.

The floor in your boat should be 1/2" unless I missed something.

Re: 72 Starcraft SS rebuild

I agree with NB regarding use of marine ply. Especially if you are planning to keep the boat. That is what I went with for my decking. I am going to seal with with epoxy then cover it with Deco Dot by Nautolex, a vinyl deck covering. They have a great variety of materials.

I have also seen a thread that mentions Nyloboard. It is made of recycled nylon carpet fibers and from what i have read is relatively inexpensive, water proof, etc. Google it and you will find the site.

Great looking boat and it will be worth the effort to restore.

Amazing the difference that a pressure wash and some cleaning can do to those old Starcrafts. They really are nice boats.

Re: 72 Starcraft SS rebuild

I would go with marine ply for the transom, as you need the better glue and fewer voids in the wood for strength, but the glassed exterior ply for the floor/deck will last a long, long time if sealed properly and cost only about half the price of the marine plywood. If you have an a large budget or are wanting this boat to outlast you then by all means use the marine ply.

The key to a long lasting floor is proper storage, either covered storage or a good quality boat cover with vents for proper ventilation, allow the boat to dry out after use and always store with the bow up and plug out.

Re: 72 Starcraft SS rebuild

Hello...I think I did some things right and some wrong...I have a 16ft
Starcraft supersport replaced original 1/2 inch deck with 3/4 inch marine
ply. and doubled up where the pedstal seats were going,,,where I kinda went
wrong was I coated both sides with 3 coats of marine varnish...later found
out the instructions for the recommended glue for the marine carpet says...
DO NOT APPLY OVER VARNISH:(....ended up using clear silicone for the
carpet...did not know how well that would stick to varnish so also used
stainless steel staples to hold the carpet to the floor as well....did not know aboutthis great web sight before doing alot of work on my boat...live and learn ...if you go with 3/4 inch you will need to shorten the hight of
thetwo sliding doors at the stern:D
