Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Nice work Azlo! I used 2 pieces of marine ply glued and screwed together and aluminum angle for my braces . i used 3/4 marine ply for the deck and stacked foam alittle shy of flush with the stringers, then I shot poly foam between the deck and sheet foam. The results were a very solid floor that don't squeak or give at all! the sheet foam lets the bilge drain and the expandable foam puts tension on the sheet foam and the deck...of course it will make the next deck install a pita , sounds like your plan will work..just make sure you can compress the overstuffed thickness with out putting too much tork on your rivnuts......btw, good job keeping a running resto thread, I was too far into mine before I found this place:( Your boat is the inboard twin to my starcraft:D) and btw....I put expandable poly foam behind my gunnels too! stiffened the sides up substantually and quitened the ride alot ...not as much water slapping resonating thru the ride. Not sure if it's the floor stiffness, or gunnel foam to give credit to but I hav'nt noticed any flexing and I've had her in some pretty hard stuff!

Thats exactly what i want to prevent,,,flexing. Im thinking foaming the gunnels too also add some braces like I did the hull. Thanks Mattrogers.

Looks like you were close. You need an IMG tag at the beginning and at the end of the link. You have the one at the end. The one at the beginning looks the same except without the /

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

I love getting mail presents. I just got my rivet nuts & tool for my deck. Like i said before i will be bolting my floor therefore have to use this rivet nuts. Instead of welding nuts to the ribs this is the solution.
MAH001521-1.jpg

There are different tools for this rivet nuts ranging from $700 to $20 like i show here. Basically it just works like a regular rivet with threads in the inside.

side view of rivet nut.

Here u can see the threads.
MAH001524.jpg

These spots are where I will be inserting the rivet nuts,,,total of 50 - 60 rivets

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

it seems we are rolling steady. I went ahead attacked the transom. Took the engine crane and pulled it out. Then laid it on the oak plywood. It was so rotted, like paper.
MAH001534-1.jpg

Traced it before the template crumbles apart.
MAH001538.jpg

Used Titebond II, spread it with brush.

[
MAH001544.jpg

then screwed it with regular screws. Will take them out after wood glue dries out and seal it with epoxy resin.

MAH001548.jpg

Put transom on Table and put weight with what ever was available. I didnt see the need of clamps, hope im right.

MAH001571.jpg

Also while i was at it i went ahead and installed some of the rivet nuts, looks good so far.

MAH001591.jpg

I will wait till maybe Wednesday to cut the transom out and then set it up.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Didnt have time during the week to work on the transom, so this weekend i focused on what I thought was gonna be something simple,,,, I was wrong.

I started to cut the outline of the old transom.

MAH001642.jpg

I installed it but it wouldn't go all the way down, it was sticking out of the top about half an inch. SO I hit it with hammers trying to make it fit.

MAH001641.jpg

Man,,had to take it out again!! SO I rolled the crane out & took the transom out again.

MAH001644.jpg

this happened 4times people!!!! What was going on? Come to find out the transom was so rotted it was distorted!! So i had to measure the actual hull & recut.

Finally, it fits!. I dont know if u guys had the zame problem, but old rotted transom did not work as a template.

MAH001681.jpg

Thanks to my brothers Abel & Adam it fits good. I just realized i have to take it out to capsulate  Oh well this is mock up, oh and cut the hole for the outdrive. More work to do.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

What do u guys suggest for the fill in the large holes on my aluminum transom?

MAH001693.jpg

Marine bondo? jb weld? This transom has had almost everything installed on its rear. The biggest hole is about an 1 1\2". The PO had a big @$$ bolt to cover it.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Now that I have the transom glued & cut i went ahead and cut the outdrive hole. I thought it would be difficult to cut a hole in 1 1/2" thick wood with the jigsaw but actually it was easy. Just have to be slow at the curves so u wont bend the blade and get a different cut at the opposite side of the transom.

MAH001735.jpg

After reading posts on transom rebuilding i decided to wire brush the inside of the transom.

MAH001821.jpg

I also drilled 3 holes at the bottom transom support to let any water that might wonder there to drain out.

MAH001823.jpg

this is what i used as a zinc chromate primer, from grainger.

MAH001893.jpg

The end result, it took three coats to for it be evenly applied.

Great work on the transom. I also think it was a good decision to clean up the aluminum on the inside which will help prevent any future corrosion. One little issue.....from what I've read, all you need is a light dusting with the ZC primer. Not sure if you were planning to anyway but make sure you top coat it with something. Primer doesn't offer any protection by itself. Even good ol' Rustoleum will work great.
