You really need to specify year and hp for any of us to help. The shift rod goes from the lower unit to just below the powerhead on every JohnnyRude I've ever seen...

Thanks for the reply kbait, I have a 40 hp johnson, not sure of the year, I just got it, If I had to guess I would call it a late 80s model. I can see whear the shift rod conects under the power head, but cant figure out how to get to it. Is there an easy way to access this, thanks in advance

not for sure on yours, but on my '75 50 horse, I had to remove the starter to gain enough access for my fat fingers to get in there. if its up under the lower carb, this should get you enough access, otherwise you may have to pull the carbs to get enough room to do it

beginner, remove starter and bottom carb, so you can see what the heck you are doing.
