Help! Did I kill these batteries?

I was trying repair a cheap beard trimmer for my parents. The original batteries were weak so I took it apart and was going to solder in a new set. Well, I forgot one step and when I went to assemble it the batteries shorted out and got hot. Nothing leaked, nothing exploded but they were hot. They weren't shorted long but long enough to get hot. I disassembled it, realized my mistake, reassembled it and it works fine now. Do you think I damaged the batteries? They were brand new ni-mh ones.

It surely sounds stronger than it did before and they aren't even recharged after the short-out. But I don't know if I did permanent damage that I can't tell. Any ideas?

Really all you can do is to check the voltage with a muti-tester and if they show the right voltage use them and then recharge and check voltage again. If they wont charge up throw them away.
