This looks like some kind of oil passage maybe...... it was gummed up so I cleaned it, but if it's meant to pass oil that's not good. Please advise.

There should be a nipple there for the gear lube reservoir. See attached diagram, item #37.

If you're never using gear lube from the reservoir, that's a good thing.

You should probably drain and clean your reservoir system as part of a yearly or every two year maintenance cycle. The solids in the gear lube tend to precipitate out and drop to the bottom of the reservoir over a few year period.

I think that is in the other half, there is a check ball on the outdrive itself. Yes?

I don't have a gear lube monitor on this boat.

Yes, and if you did, that's where it would go. What is the serial number for your drive?

The parts manual for that serial number shows a gear lube reservior. Are you the original owner?

Yes, but that is the other half of the system... If you're not the original owner, sounds like someone along the way may have removed it.

I'm not the original owner.... if it has been removed, what are the caveats of this?

First of all, that SN is for a transom shield, not an outdrive, second, it's a 1992. Third. from 91 through 93, the Gen II drives did not have reservoirs, the hole was in the bell housing as shown, but nothing hooked to it.
There was no passage thru the transom shield for a fitting even.
The bellhousing may have been replaced for a number of reasons, and all the new ones have the hole.
Best thing to do is see if there is anything on the outdrive to match the hole.
If it has a dipstick on the top of the drive, there is not a fitting on the drive.

Don, there is only the oil vent on the port side of the outdrive. Sounds like it's okay to assemble the way it is, yes?

Oh, have not had the top fill plug out yet... will check that when I remount the drive.

Don, the outdrive does have a checkball mechanism on it that lines up with that hole on the bellhousing.

Could be the drive is not the original then?

Maybe it isn't. I'm just concerned, since I don't know, is it okay to use this way with that checkball apparatus on the drive unit and nothing in the bell housing?
