1977 bowrider 16 foot with a 1980 mercury outboard

bought this boat about a week ago, and does not seem to fast, its only doing about 28km a hour , should it go faster, if so, what could be wrong?

there are many different size Mercury Outboards, what size is yours?

how many people are in the vessel? how much weight is it rated for, do you have any other excess weight in the vessel, is the motor running properly. need a little more information, and any history on the vessel/motor would be helpful as well

there was nuthing in the boat other when my wife and my self, and we are not big ppl, this was the first time the boat was out in about a year,i dont think the motor is runnin as fast as it should, just not sure what to check for.

do you know how many rpm's you are at when you are running at wot? are you able to get up on plane?

the tack for the rpm is not working, yea i was able to get on plane

I've got a 1971 Merc 800 pushing a 1971 heavy deep V fiberglass runabout at a little over 50kph using a 17p prop. Only had the boat out a couple times (new to me) and both times had rough water conditions so never really got a true WOT speed test yet.

What prop are you using?

I have exact same motor on a 16 foot thundercraft, with a 19p prop, and I get 36 mph with wife and two teenagers onboard
