Hello everyone !! I'm new to iboats and could use some help. I have a 14' alum Starcraft ( not sure of the year ) and would like to clean it up . The paint on the boat floor is coming off so I would like to sand it off and re paint it ( what are the steps and what type of primer and paint should iI use ? ). I'm going to move the rear bench seat forward about 8", then I'd like to build a storage compartment behind the rear bench and under the bow space that's just wasted. Need advice on types of wood, thickness, resin, glue and carpet. Should I also be worried about the weight ??? I'm not going to paint the outside of the boat just clean t up. This site is amazing, very informative.
Thank you in advance :)

I would strip out the wood, and build a nice compartment for your gas tanks and battery. Then make a nice store compartment for the front and add some descent seating. such a small boat, I would go with 1/4 plywood with resin and glass on top to seal out for water.

Just my thoughts

Welcome to iboats.

We probably have the best collection of restoration information that can be found and even better many of us are Starcraft aluminum boat addicts!

Your questions are good and the answers could fill books.

Strip out the seats, rebuck the rivets, sand off the loose paint, use gluvit on the seams and rivets, prime with zinc chromate on any exposed aluminum, roll and tip your paint.... Use only exterior plywood and NOT Pressure Treated (it does not play well with aluminum).....

Read through the restorations we have in progress.

How's the outboard? Where do you intend on boating? Consider installing a small splashwell.....

Thanks for all the info , definitely sending me in the right direction...The seats will be replaced. BassinVt1 I apologize if this is a dumb question but after the resin what does glass on top mean ? I guess I can check pressure treated wood OFF my list LOL...( good tip Bob_VT )...The outboard is ok, it runs, I'm going to leave that to someone who knows about boat motors....Didn't think of a splashwell before but gonna consider it now ....Rickairmedic I would like to see some photos of your 16' Starcraft Jupiter V , then I can get some ideas.

Thanks again BassinVt1 ,Bob_VT ,Rickairmedic

I'll take some good pics of the rear storage and splashwell on mine for you tomorrow . I thought the doors to the rear compartment had been redone by a P/O but in looking at some factory brochures they are actually original .Heres a link to my Flickr with the current pics of the Jupiter V .

YEh a loose battery like that is dangerous,

you'll need to give the trailer some attention before you poke a hole in the hull, maybe try sliding the boat back so it sits on the roller at the stern, you should be able to move the winch post back, then check for balance.

Should be a nice fun boat when its done.

14 I ended up running service calls all day Imagine that we hit the 90's this weekend and all of a sudden peaples AC doesnt work . Needless to say I didnt get any pics for you today . I will do my best to get them tomorrow before I head out . As far as looking at other peaples projects for ideas your best bet is to type Starcraft into the search box up top you will get PLENTY of threads to look at Currently Northbeach is almost done with the prettiest Starcraft on here . Cheapboatkev is also doing a bangup job using reasonable materials ezmoby is also doing a nice boat without braking the bank to bad :D. I am also working on mine although right now about the only thing I am working on on it is making sure I dont scratch it as I run down the driveway to head out for another service call :D.BobVT is also doing up a nice starcraft and there are others I am sure I have missed but those jump out as good boats to start looking at . I will warn you though Northbeaches boat has been refered to as BOAT PORN .

1st off, Welcome Aboard and YES!!! Another Starcraft!!! Excellent!!!

Regarding the "glass on top" part.....

Bassin is referring to woven fiberglass mat that is laid on the plywood...coat of resin, fiberglass matting, repeat if necessary...

It waterproofs your plywood decking from warping and rotting away in a year (or less!) You can do a "search" by using the toolbar search feature that is just under the section where it says "Welcome 14SCPN"..Type in deck repairs, or replacing deck in aluminum boat....Or dare I say the word "floor" (cough cough) has been used as well...

NorthBeaches resto is here....

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=286412

about the 3rd page I think, he is glassing his deck...

Post any questions you may have...and I gotta ask...The pic you posted, looks like a garage sale is going on, is that where ya found her?

Re: Need some help and advice !!

Wow !!! Northbeach is doing an amazing job !!!! :D BobVT is doing a great job too....Going to secure the battery properly and adjust the trailer to fit the boat . CheapboatKev lmao  thanks for correcting me on the floor / deck thing  This is my first boat and I need to learn the proper names for things. The garage sale was held by my father in law lol, that's just where I keep the boat. Thanks for the link ezmobee, hopefully this isn't a project I'm gonna regret:eek:

I want to clean my boat up inside and out, can anyone suggest cleaning solutions or alternatives?? I've read so many different things like 3M, Comet, Steel wool, Vasoline, Mr.Clean Eraser pads, Waxes and so on and so on ...

If I want to build a storage box with cup holders built in , where could I find the inserts for the cups?

All suggestions are appreciated:D !

Thank you....

The cupholders like Kev posted are available at wally world in the boating/sportinggoods section and also at Bass pro shops if you would rather grab them locally. They come in white and black . I havent asked Northbeach yet where he got the PRETTY Stainless ones :D.
