volvo shimming tricks?

So as you my know, I'm trying to make a 290 and 280 drive work.

I read the manual on shimming the vertical shaft bearing into the race on the intermediate housing. (a 280 lower on a 290 intermediate housing in my case) The process is simple enough, but the tool required is something I obviously don't' have. I probably know the answer to this, but are there any tricks around the specialty tool? Can you just look at the wear pattern in the bearing?

Volvo service is limited around here for drives this old, thats all.

Thanks,
Matt

A depth micrometer is the only way I know of for taking those measurements.

Too tight and they will burn up, too loose and the will beat themselves to death.

well a depth mike I can get, but the tool they showed (spanner tool

You don't take that nut off. you need to get the race out of the 280 intermediate housing, and put it on the bearing of the 280 lower. Then remove the bearing race in the 290 intermediate and put it with the 290 lower.
Now, go to page 120 of the manual (actual manual page number) and follow those directions to shim the 280 race to the 290 intermediate.
