With ethanol fuel you may not get to 6000 like we used to. If you can keep going up with the plate I'd try that in small steps, you're very close. Going to a 15" prop, at this point, may well slow you down. On a pad bottom hull it'd be easier to get close to 6700, just may not happen (efficiently) with a V bottom.
As for fuel, if you can find 87 non-ethanol that would be the first choice. Some marinas around here have it. We're starting to see the 90 octane, ethanol free but you get away from the ethanol problems and get into the octane issues. Most everybody uses some ethanol treatment like Sta-Bil or Startron and just hopes for the best. A good 10 micron filter is a must. It really seems to be worst on motors with VST tanks and / or injectors. The old carb'd motors seem to be a little more forgiving in some ways.
