Is the Vernatherm the device that sits just about the spark plug that has a wire attaching to where the tilt/trim relays are housed?

No, the vernatherm is a kind of thermostat used in some thermostat housings.

The part with the tan wire leading from the cylinder head(s) is correctly called a temperature switch.

Connection is very loose from the wire to the screwed in sensor . Pops out from any small engine shake.

That should be a crossflow model with the temperature switch held in place by the water cover on the cylinder head. They are sealed in with a rubberized material like 3M 847 to keep them from leaking. You have to take the water cover off to service them.

My motor has the vernatherm's in place. I believe there is a conversion should you choose to change to regular thermostats. Mine are fine so far.
