Just wanted to know what the experts prefer, I've done it both ways and they never come up the same, points break method yeilds me a loose .026 with the points block right on the "o" in "top" of distributor cam.
When feeling for .020 with guage points ends up breaking just after the notch lines up. I can't win.

Set the rub block on the highest point on the cam lobe, adjust the points to .020 there.

Re: Points break method vs feeler guage

It seems to me that both ways have similar results, the biggest problem is the wear between the stator plate bushing and the block. This makes it very hard to get the points perfect. To verify that you have set the points to factory spec, check each cylinder with a timing light and compare the double marks on the stator plate with the single mark on the flywheel. The single mark on the flywheel should be inbetween the double marks on the stator plate. If not, re-adjust points.
