Hello, I was looking at a carb for a 1958 Johnson 18 HP that I got cheap as a back up. I have a Selco book for this motor from the library and I have one question. On step 4-12 in the book, it says to remove the pin holding the float in the bowl cavity. It says while lifting it out observe the spring that is attached to the small needle. This carb didn't have a small spring, and a differnet book didn't show this part. Does this one need the spring? If so, where can find it, I didn't see one with the carb rebuild kits. Thanks for the help.

It didn't have one. The Seloc is a multi-year, multi-hp book there are bound to be differences between years/motors.

You might want to replace the float if its the original cork float as the alcohol in modern gas may dissolve the shellac.

Thank you Wbeaton, takes that worry away. I agree about the cork float. it is in nice shape but I could easily see it turning into mush and screwing up the carb, I ordered a plastic one. Thanks again for the help!:)
