Some have claimed that "Fuel proof dope" from the hobby store (model airplanes) works. I replace the cork floats, if I can.

I agree, replace it. You have no way of knowing that it is completely dried out. I've heard of using dope before but now a day I wonder what E10 would do to it.

Anybody have a source for floats for a HD-25, 2.5 hp Johnson twin, circa late '40's?

Mercury. Part number 18-7208, here at iboats. Run a 3/32" drill down through the center for the float pin. It is made of fuel-proof, alcohol-proof material.
