My last two boats I sold were personal checks, I held the boats and titles until the checks cleared, it was like 5 days, both buyers understood. I paid cash for all my boats, cash in hand seem to make a better negotiating tool. And yes you can have local PD or Sheriff come out and run a VIN/HIN check to verify.

Counterfeiting is the only reason I can think of.
I've seen counterfeit USPS Money Orders of all things.

Cashier's checks can be counterfited. Cash is king. When I sold my boat and got all cash, it was a little nerve-racking handling all that cash, but yeah, maybe bring a friend when you do the transaction.

When I sold my Harley, it was cash only. I always have three things with me, a counterfit bill detecting pen, two large friends and my 45.

Couple of years ago I sold a boat to a man who lived in DC but was from South Africa, I was a little bit leery, so we went to his bank and they gave me a certified check that they said could not be cancelled.

You really have to be careful.
