Can someone tell me what is the horsepower of the mercruiser 305 ci 5Ltre V8is, I am looking into buying one and get different answers from different suppliers and what would be the length from waterpump to flywheel and the width of the engine.
I am replacing a V6 4.3 LX on my boat

Ayuh,...

The Width is the Same as your 4.3l....
Merc. lists the Length from the Rear Motor Mounts, not the Flywheel...
The V6s are 28, 1/8"...
The V8s are 32, 7/16"...

Motor mounts, fore to aft, C to C, are 15, 9/16" for the V6,+ 19, 15/16" for the V8s...

The 305s have been rated from about 185hp tp 260hp, depending on the Induction system used,+ the Vintage...

All that said,....
Why wouldn't you be lookin' at a 350,..??..?? It's the Same Size,+ Money as the 305s....
Free HorsePower so to speak...

Re: horsepower

Thats it ^ what Bond-O said and latter if you want theres all kinds of stuff you can do to a 5.7 if your feeling the need for a little more speed.

Why not a 383, more torque than the 350, which is what really moves the boat?

Ayuh,...

Because a long block replacement for a 305, or a 350 is about $ame co$t, or the 350 could be $omewhat Cheaper...Due to the volume...

A 383 is a Cu$tom Build that'll Co$t More....

Re: horsepower

Unless this is a 22' or greater size boat, that is on the verge of needing a BB, (not that likely given the original V6 pkg), the extra cost to build a 383 ($1000-2000) is probably not worth it. If running an alpha, will need to be gentle, too. Anything beyond a 350, will add cost over current 305 plans.

But, it would be fun to have one! :)

PS: I just hate it when Bondo can type faster than I. :(

Re: horsepower

Agreed, if you make those assumptions... But nowhere in his post does he state he is going with a rebuilt long block nor does he say anything about price vs Hp being his major concern.

Just doing some dreaming for him.;)
