Hello,

I have a 40HP 2007 4 stroke efi Mercury motor and purchased a Fuel Filter & Water Separator and was googling for instructions on how to install it.

I ran across a forum that said Mercury recommends that these devices NOT be installed.

What gives?

Martian.

I have a 2005 model 50hp EFI 4stroke and have had a water seperator fitted since new (250 hrs).

I cannot think of any logical argument why they would say NOT to fit one.

Do you have the link to the forum in question? Was it a member of the boating public that made that statment or a merc technician?

Yes, it IS possible to cause a fuel restriction, thus leaning out the motor and causing damage.

HOWEVER, regular maintenance, changing the filter, to prevent the restriction caused by a full, clogged filter, is all that is necessary to prevent the possibility of the problem.
