how is the easy shift switch wired

I would like to know how the easy shift switch is wired into a 1973 merc 165 inline 6. it was disconected bya previous owner due to bad adj. now it is adj perf. but i need to no where the ground wire goes after the switch. i was told by someone that it goes to the neg post on the coil but i want to know before i do this that it is correct.

sorry i was a little vauge i mean i have one lead grounded to the block now i need to know where the "other " lead goes after the switch

The brown wire goes to the - side of the coil......;)

thanks thats what i need to know. Now heres the next ?. there are 4 wires associated with the switch. one black one brown on starboard side and the same come out of the port side. i only need 2 (one black one brown) what are the other 2 wires for?

The setups do vary slightly from year to year.....
Look on the back of the plug mount where the engine harness meets the helm harness.....
If there are two holes that would receive bullet connectors, that's where they go....;)

I suspect the other two wires would go for your trim limit switch.
