mercury 90hp starting "squeal"????

Greetings -

I have a 1983 90hp Merc that has been doing great. Last time out it makes a funny "high pitched" squeal when the key is turned. The motor does turn and eventually starts / runs / no problem.

I pulled the cover and the sound appears to come from the area of the starter.

Sign of a bad starter or part within it?

something else with the motor.

BTW, battery is solid and has good crank...

You might pull the starter and see if it spins freely w/o noise. It may need some grease or oil on the bushings.
