Are there adaptors for Merc wire harness's?

I'm going from a '87 merc to a '98 merc. is there a plug adapter, or will I need to get a complete new harness? ( I really dont want to re-wire my pontoon) The only reason I'm looking at a Merc is to re-use my cables. If There are no addaptors, I may as well look at other motors also.

Chris, I do not know if there are adapters that will work for you. Your wiring harness could be adapted if you can come up with a piece of the correct harness, (ie the plug into the new motor). The wires in your '87 harness may be butt spliced to the new harness, and the motor will function perfectly.

I use my '77 MerControls to run my '93 Merc, so it can easily be done.

Thanks, I ended up callin Mercury marine, gave them the two S/N, they said the cables and harnesses are the same. so they will fit. no adapters needed.
