checking gear oil level.

I've got a 1994 9.9 merc and the last time I was running in (at full throttle), it would rev up without any gain in speed, then rev back down. I figure its either the prop loosing its 'track' or 'bite' in the water (due to a soft hull zodiak, poor aerodynamics) or theres something wrong with the lower unit. when it grabs again, it doesnt seem to send a jolt through the motor so I hope its not the gear casing. is there any way to check my gear oil level without having to drain and replace all of it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: checking gear oil level.

My guess is that your prop is ventilating (grabbing air), 99M. There is some chance that the prop has spun the hub, but my first vote is for ventilation.

Only a slim chance that it is geartrain trouble.

Oil is cheap, if you have any doubts at all, change it and check for yourself..............Irv964
