So how do you remember what side of the boat is called?

One of the guys at work does it this way
port has 4 letters so does the word left and the star board well board has 5 letters so does the word right.

I use the saying (no port left) which means the right side has to be star board.
Some of the old sea men up here will even use these terms when describing there car to me.
I just thought it would be interesting to see how some other people remeber what side of the boat there on.

I remember the way you do. Port and left both have 4 letters. But my main fishing buddy refuses to learn so I have to say something like "the front right hatch."

I was taught it with this (almost) joke.

A sailor walks into a busy bar and asks the bartender for a beer.
The bartender replies,
"sorry mate, it's been a very busy night, we only have RED PORT LEFT"

Gee, I remember that port is left and starboard is right. I can also remember my name, mailing and street address (which is easy because they are the same) and my phone number! :D Some things are just meant to be remembered. ;)

I remember it because port is on the left and starboard is on the right. If it were different, I would be confused.

Both "L" and "P" come before "S" and "R" in the alaphabet, thats how I remember, its that whole fwd and aft that gets me all confused...

Yeah but what if you're standing at the bow facing the stern? Your right become left and left become right.

Nope sorry I haven't. I googled him & see he's a motorcross racer, I do know a Brain Stewart maybe he knows him, he's into that motorcross stuff, I'm more into drag racing type stuff.

Get a sharpie and print it on your feet...... if you are creative you can use the sharpie to match the days of the week on your tidy whitey underwear! :D

The way I was taught is:

The "R" in Starboard sounds like R. R = right.
