Re: How many batteries does it take to start an 1986 Evinrude V4 140hp
Starting procedure, having a good fully charged battery and engine cranking over at leats 300 rpms........
* - Prime fuel primer bulb until it is hard.
* - Apply a slight bit of throttle without putting the engine in gear, enough to crack the throttle butterflies.
* - Turn key to the start position and push in the key to engage the fuel primer solenoid. Engine should start and run within six (6) revolutions.
* - When the engine fires and starts to run, release the key so that the key backs up to the run position and the fuel primer solenoid disengages.
If you're using the above procedure to start that engine and it does not start within the mentioned six (6) revolutions, a problem exists with either compression, ignition (spark), or the fuel system.
Compression should be approximately 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Is it?
Spark (with the spark plugs removed) should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame..... a real SNAP! Does it?
