I repaired a an ABS Mohawk Intrepid using the West System Method. Worked out great. With the plastic rod welding the heat is critical, to much and the work melts away. I did a field repair on a HDPE Ocean Kayak with some marine epoxy putty from Home Depot. I have yet to need a permanent solution.

Re: Plastic Peddle Boat Repair

I was researching the motorcycle fairing idea for another project I am working on and came across this link.

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Plastics_repair_with_ABS_cement

My 10 yr old son's Suzuki Dirt Bike fender was appearently repaired in a way similiar to this then painted because when I stripped it down to repaint it, I saw evidence of a repair but didnt think about it then..

I remembered this particular posting because I am dealing with a similiar repair and thought I would share the link I found. If it is the way his fender was repaired, it is as strong as the original molded piece.. Plus it dont cost a heck of a lot of money to try.

Hope it helps somewhat.

Re: Plastic Peddle Boat Repair

I just picked up this plastic peddle boat for $20 and it has cracks in it that need repair. I was wondering will fibreglass resin stick to it? I only have the poly right now and cloth but could go get epoxy if folks think it will be better. Or if not fibreglass, any other iideas as to repair it? And as the repairs are low down water will sit there. Comments? Opinions, ideas? Thanks all :)
Looks vacuum formed (molded) so there's a good chance it's ABS plastic. The tupperwear variety everyone's been tossing about is polyethylene.

5200 might stick temporarily, but for this job it would be wimpy. It's only a sticky caulk not a repair adhesive - look at the tensile strength numbers 5200 450 lbs, epoxy 400,000 lbs

Plastic welding would be the first choice. The caveat being if the plastic shell is getting brittle from UV, welding won't take and the whole thing was doomed to begin with.

The other repair material would be WEST G-Flex epoxy - made for this sort of stuff. There are other brands too, but not likely found in a big box home store. You gotta think boats not home repair.

Check out what the canoe people use or Snark toy sailboats. They make lots of ABS boats.

You could try finding the manufacturer and just asking too.
