I have a Gale, model # 15D15B, serial # 882590. That's all I know about it. I have it on my 14' aluminum boat and it runs great. I read on here about other Gale's and that has me concerned that I may be using the wrong gas/oil mixture. I use the same mix for my 76 Johnson 15hp (50:1). I would appreciate any info I can get.

Thanks
Fred

Don't run at 50:1. The 15 uses some friction bearings, the lower main and piston pin,and should be run at 24:1.use TCW3 rated oil.

What else can anyone tell me? I'd like to know all I can about this engine. It runs great.

Gale was the generic mfg. division of OMC/Evinrude/Johnson. Great motors. You have a 1963 Gale 15 hp. Keep good plugs in it, fresh fuel (not stale), store it correctly, check/replace the impeller regularly, and same with LU lube. It's only 45 years old, still just a pup, keep it running and pass it on to the next generation.

So it's a 63 model. Is this info correct, 24:1 mix? Can you tell me what type lower unit oil I should use, Plug type and gap? Impeller seems fine (I have a good stream coming out), and thanks for the info on Ken Cook. I'll take a look for a manual. Also any info on de-carbing this engine with Seafoam?

Use Champion J4C plugs gapped at .030", FF.

If you get into tha Magnetos set points at .020".

Re: Gale (what can you tell me?)

Lower unit lube is standard outboard gear lube.15hp @ 4,500 rpm,23/8" bore X 21/4' stroke.19.94 cu in. my aftermarket manual says Champion J6C plug set at .030. J4C is just a little cooler might foul easier if you troll alot.
last year for the J/E 15 was 56 first year for Gale was 60 ,15D10.

Re: Gale (what can you tell me?)

Manuals and techs don't all agree on the plugs, FF. My OEM Manual says J4J, which was replaced by the J4C.

For high speed and cruising, the J4C works better than the hotter J6C, but for extended trolling either open the gap on the J4C to .040" or use J6Cs gapped at .030"

Pumping water right now doesn't mean much. If the impeller is old, or you don't know the history, replace it. Once it sheds all it's blades and burns up the motor it's too late.
