I am doing few repairs on some cracks above my rub rails area . I do not want to paint the boat at this time after the repairs are done . I was going to use poly fiberglass resin so I could gel coat it after the repair . I have some experiance with epoxy but none with poly products . my question is are there any epoxy resin that you can use gel coat over and how much differents is there using poly resin products compared to epoxy ?

Re: Epoxy or poly fiberglass resin ?

do you mean small spiderweb cracks ......look like stress crack in the gell coat?

if so this is called crazing......

it it treated by grinding out the gellcoat...filling with waterproof filler and either painting or re gelling it.....

i dont really know if the epoxy will work without a strand or two in the mix.

can you be more specific?

Use a polyester structural filler if they need strength...it has glass fibers for strength. Then you can gel coat over it.

Any decent boat supply shop should have some type of structual poly filler. I get it from the local westmarine and use their own house brand. They also carry the 3M brand in a large tube. Both are a buttery consistancy and are easy to work with. The 3M is harder on the pocket book.

You can use Micro-fibres for this job.

Hope this helps.

I have used "Marine-Tex" for many years of small repairs.
Just follow the directions, it sets up in a short time, & just before a final set use "Acetone" for a smooth Finish "It can be sanded, drilled,on & on, Great product.
