Trying to find out why i'm getting exhaust stains on the upper housing.
Is there a gasket leaking somewhere?

I have a 1978 Johnson 35 HP that shows the same thing (on one side only - port side)

Im no Dhadley, but Ill throw my 2 cents in ;) When you had your lu down last, did you have a look at the exhaust ports? I find that to be a good time to inspect and clean my exhaust. Ensure that the gaskets between the segments are intact and secure. One of the exhaust housing seals may be gone (below the upper inner exhaust housing, or below the lower inner exhaust housing) or the cover to housing seal could be shot.

Thanks HighTrim, When i had the lower off i did replace the rubber gaskets on the lower exhaust tube.I'm beginning to think being those were in pretty bad shape i have a bad gasket farther up.I wish i would have known what to look for when i had the lower off. This is my first Johnson outboard. The only other outboards i have owned were black..

"The only other outboards i have owned were black.." You just couldn't see it.

Most likely powerhead to exhaust tower gasket. Not hard to remedy.

Yeah if you replaced the lower exhaust housing seals, Im pretty sure the housing to cover seal is shot, usually if one is gone, the others are too or arent far behind. It is in between the housing covers and the outer exhaust housing.

Being a crossflow it could be the powerhead base gasket or the adaptor to mid gasket. Start it up with the lower pan off and see if you can feel any leaks.
