1997 120, Forward only, no neutral, reverse

Changed out the water pump, put the LL unit back in with console shifter in "forward". Did not check the control before leaving for the ramp. With the boat in the water,the "forward, prop rotation clockwise" is all I get, no neutral, no reverse. What do I need to do now?

Remove lower unit.
Put shift handle in forward gear.
Turn the shift rod by hand, putting it into forward gear also.
Install lower unit.

Thank you, I thought so. I have a manual on this but it was so vague. Do you know offhand if "forward" on the shift shaft is in the relative middle, clockwise til it stops, or counterclockwise til it stops?

If memory serves me you would turn it counterclockwise. The important thing is when you have it in fwd turn the prop by hand , it will "ratchet in one direction and turn th shaft in opposite direction. If in rev the prop turns shaft both directions Good luck.
