I have a 23ft Bayliner Trophy with a 5.7 Mercruiser 350. I was told it was not good to run at full throttle. Is this true and if so why not?

I guess it depends on How Long you want it to last..........

You can Hammer the Snot out of it,+ run it at WOT, All Day Long if you Want........

Most of Us tend to Cruise at about 3200/ 3500rpms........
That gives decent Fuel mileage,+ Good Longevity..............

Only objection I can think of is that the gas gauge needle will travel at about the same rate as the minute hand of a clock, only the other way.

I expect it will heat up the outdrive though, maybe consider installing a shower on it.

Anything on the subject of extended wot in your Mercruiser owner's manual?
In the Mercruiser owner's manual it does not go into wot. When at wot it is usually there for no more than 15 min.

What is the advantage of using a shower on the outdrive other than cooling?

Cooling is the only advantage of a drive shower. Unless you count the advantage of having a conversation starter - "What is that for?" ;) Actually cooling leads to the real advantage - longer life of the oil and hence, the drive.
