Rectifier Issue

Just tested the rectifier on my 78 Merc 500 and it failed one of the tests. My question is, could a bad rectifier cause this engine to not reach the 5000-5500 rpms ant WOT?

It could alter the RPM reading as the tach is powered by the alternator but not the actual running of the engine inless it's ADI ign. and the rectifier is shorted to - and then it could, just remove the 2 yellow wire and test run to find out for sure
