shifting problem

just had heads, pistons reworked, ran a tank and everything OK. Now, when shifting into gear, went in reverse.
took off cover and found carter type pin underneath cables. any help?

need to know what year motor, what hp motor, tiller or remote, etc.

it's a 115hp Evinrude, 1995 or '96 on Ranger boat. not tiller . thanks

If you're saying you found that pin just laying in there, that's probably the pin that goes in the shift linkage. To disconnect the shift linkage you pull that pin and slide the shift lever out. To reconnect the shift linkage you slide the shift lever in so the shaft goes back in the clevis and put the pin back in the secure it in place. It won't change the direction of shift or prop rotation.

Did the cables get reversed by chance. Disconnect both. Have someone move the throttle lever. The first cable to move is the shift cable.

does anyone have a schematic or blow up of this. i'm not sure where the pin (which looks like a big bobbie pi), goes i don't see a hole for it in cable linkage???
